T

The girls and Charlie and their new clothes from Hope and Emma...they had a fashion show trying on the clothes....love those older cousins...
Girls with their pumpkins from Malinda and Tom and of course some of the kittens...
View from Parkway...2008 what a wonderful trip roaming around these magnificent mountains....a last hurrah before winter...a true sendoff for the summer!
10-24-08
Been awhile since I posted...alot has been going on.
Malinda and Tom were up visiting their home in Maggie Valley and came by to see us. They brought the girls each a pumpkin. We went to the Corner Kitchen for a lovely lunch....we had a simply marvelous lunch and of course constant conversation. Malinda looks great and says that she is feeling good. We talked about everyone...including Connor of course...it was wonderful to catch up on everyone. Will keep them both in my thoughts and prayers as they travel down this road...true love...after all these years...wonderful to experience!
The girls are doing well in school. Tori continues with her manager job with the winning VSMS vollyball team...Jenna continues with chess and Sam is doing chess club also. They had a wonderful time on the wagon train. Ann posted some great pictures.
Tim and Robyn and Hope and Emma came to see us last weekend. They attended a session of their church here in Biltmore. I did my "fun job" friday thru sunday at the Biltmore. Thanks to Gene for all his help making my exhibit easy and fun. Tim and family toured the house and barn and came to see Gene and I in the Barn area. They were such good sports when I failed my tour guide job again..failing to notice their parking lot area...lol... appreciate them for sure!!! It was a wonderful fall weekend ... perfect weather for us...cold..very cold by saturday night when we went to visit the Reid/Ross wagon in Mills River. We sat around the bonfire trying to keep warm..drinking Alvin's hot cider..what fun!
This week has gone by fast. Sam fell at school pm the monkey bars and broke one of her front teeth...she was so upset..but it was neat to hear that the teacher and principal were out looking for the tooth in the gravel play area. As always Ms. Cindy was right there to help..she is always looking out for our girls...we are so thankful to them all. Sam's tooth will be able to be fixed good as new.
The girls tye dyed shirts to wear to a Halloween Party tonight...they are going as old hippies...we happen to have some stuff around here for them to wear...imagine that!
A serious note..lets keep America and our leaders...current and those in the election process in our prayers...there is so much turmoil going on...we need to remember... IN GOD WE TRUST~~
Happy Weekend to everyone...hug your loved ones!

Monday memories
This cider press belonged to my great grandfather Johnston. It was given to wonderful stewards...my cousins the Reids.. they have lovingly keep it and restored it and are now making cider again. My brother Ike and I have great memories of this cider operation when we were kids. We were given some to take home to Fl. one year and it "got old"..lolol on the way home... we really thought we had treasure....Ann and her girls went over a couple a weekends ago and they were gifted some more cider but thankfully only had to drive over one drive-way to get it home...such memories...we sure are fortunate to have them. We had a sad time over this last weekend...Ann had bought a pot belled pig at the Mountain Fair and it was here only one night and one day and then it died. We really do not know what caused its demise but it was so sad for Ann her girls.
Looking out over the mountains to the west last night...even thru the tears for the lost pig..I said a prayer of thanks...to be able to be where you "always wanted to be" is a blessing I am so thankful to have. The sun was setting..the girls were running home and this ole bear just sat in her swing and cried tears of joy to be here....Gene and Ann buried the piglet in the pet cemetery while the dogs and I watched from the porch...Bless Gene's heart..he is always the pet undertaker.

The bottom photo is of one of the kittens ..I can never tell which one...Timmy or Katy and Yonah the tye dye black one. We have had so much fun with these kittens...we believe their mother Brittain is trying to get them to move out...she keeps taking them to the barn...they come back to the porch for the food.
We had a nice weekend except for the bad Dylan piggie story. R.I.P. Dylan...

Been a long time between posts. Everyone here has been preparing for the Fair. They did a fine job preparing their animals. Ann was up before work every day and the girls helped with afternoon feedings. I do so enjoy seeing them growing up here. Read Ann's blog for pictures and a great description of their busy but fun weekend.
Gene was alot of help to them and he enjoyed seeing them...even when it required "cow duties"!
This week we hope to settle down a bit and concentrate on school...yes, school work.
Charlie and Maggie are slowly but surely getting along better. She at least now has someone to play with. The kittens are doing well. Brittain has yet to convince them to leave home for the barn. I have enjoyed watching them grow.
Am getting ready for my chair caning display at the Biltmore this weekend. I hope it all goes smoothly.
Will have some pictures after the event. They have a fun weekend planned at the winery and Barn.

Cherokee Lesson 9-4-08
May we all remember to always feed the right wolf.
"An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life."A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy."It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego."He continued, "The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."The grandson was quiet for a moment and then asked his grandfather, " If I have the wolves inside me as well, which wolf will win?"The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Tuesday all day
9-2-08 We had a great Labor Day....not much going on. We traveled across the mountains to Gatlinburg on sunday...we were surprised at the amount of people still traveling. There was an old car show there so Gene loved it especially. Monday we had a cookout here but had to eat indoors due to the uncertain weather. The storms are sure kicking up around the country...hope Gustav does not do too much harm down Narlins' way..
Baby Graham got to come home...he sure is a beautiful baby! I know his parents and grand-parents are proud of him. I can not wait to give him a BIG bear hug when I get to see him.
Ann and the girls are "training" their cows and sheep for the upcoming fair. Hope the storms do not come and wash it away!
Happy Belated Labor Day to everyone!

Frantic Friday
8-29-08
Have been busy here. Had two Graham cousins come to visit from Fl.. Dow and Juanita...they were such good sports...we toured all over the area in the VW top off car.. and I got the Floridians a sunburn...we visited Wolf's angel, Hville, Brevard, got some apples, downtown Asheville..they took us out to eat at Frankie Bones....I so enjoyed their visit. Hope they will come back.
Monday 8-25 was Ann's 35th birthday...where have the years gone? We went out for Greek on sunday night and then supper and cookie cake here on Monday.
Tori had her first two volleyball games as manager..she said that they call her the Energizer Bunny..a great name for her.
Family in Fl. fared well with Fay..Jan had to remove some water from her pool but overall everyone was fine...we had rain here for most of this week due to the storm but we needed it so bad.
Hope has been driving now almost a week...knew she would do well... have some pictures but am not smart enough to transfer here...Emma is doing well..heard she hurt her foot at school and hope she is better now...no sale of the house yet but I hope it is soon...the "new house" is just waiting for them.
Baby J..Brian and Kelly's boy was born this morning. Everyone well.."big boy...dark hair"..so happy he is here...now he needs a name!
We now have three cows and three sheep for Fair...I should say the girls and Ann have them...they take care of them all by themselves...the rain this week has made it hard for them all... hope the turkeys do not drown.
Gene has been busy at work...new stores and hiring keeps him busy...wish I could have his attitude..never complains...think I will work on that (again)..lol
Labor Day weekend up coming... hope the rain stops..we are planning a quiet weekend except for a wedding reception on saturday...

Gene worked sat. am and then we went to the Fair Grounds to assist Ann in her Edy's Ice Cream Social. She had entered a contest and won ice cream to have a social..complete with all the fixings.. They were at the Fair Grounds to attend a Animal Show school and she set up to have the social there...it was a true joy to see the kids..little and big enjoying the great Edy's ice cream. We are so very fortunate to live in an area with true community spirit and it sure showed on saturday...Thanks Edy's..you sure did a great job of advertising your product.
The girls and Ann then went to their 4-H meeting for August. They learned how to wash their animals....ok..ok..I had no idea how/or even why/ you would wash a chicken... let alone a cow...will add pics to show their success.
Gene and I and the pups went to Flat Rock for supper and then over to Brevard for the final Cardinal Show this summer. We had a great time. Had a little bit of rain...we sure could use more.
Sunday was spent re-arranging the dust in this house as we have Graham relatives coming to visit this week...looking forward to seeing them. Nita and Dow are coming up from Florida and I want them to see our little farm.
Sending special love and Bear Karma to Mick..so sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad. It is so wonderful that you found Tom and his family...they are fortunate to have found YOU! Cherish the good memories..they are helpful now.
Thinking today about my special nephew Brian and his lovely wife Kelly...thanks for the pics..that will be one well loved baby...and the prettiest one we have ever seen ..I am sure of that..________ William you will be welcomed with love!

Sad news..Tom,our gray (first born) kitty, was found dead yesterday. Ann buried him for us...sad but the girls were very understanding. Their first day of school went well according to all reports. Only Tori had homework so we are off to another school year full of success. Today I took Susan to Corner Kitchen for breakfast for her birthday...we had a good time and as always the food was wonderful. The pups and I went to Brevard to our favorite bakery this afternoon for english muffins for Gene and bread. It rained this afternoon...we sure are glad to see it. Talked to Tim on his way back to Ga.

Drum Roll please
8-14-08
Well.. the much anticipated day has arrived without too much fan fare...it is 9:30am and I miss them already...albeit the noise or lack of it... most noticed...hope their day has started off well! Ann took pictures of their first day and I will post them later. The twins went to meet their respective teachers on tuesday....the age old saga continues..."will I remember my combination???"...I had that dream for years...now it is the grands turn. Sam got the same wonderful teacher that Jenna had in the 3rd grade so we know Sam's year is a given. Ms. Warren started Jen's love of math on track and then of course last year she was assured the road paved well. The twins went back to ACE to visit with their former teachers as Sam was registered for this year.
We did some errands yesterday and then they chose Taco Bell for lunch...oh well... it was THEIR choice.
Gene is off to Charlotte area today and will be home tonight....
Now what to do for my first day off (until 3:00)?????

Kitties and Birds
08-12-08
The pictures below tell a story of the happenings on our front porch..or as Ho refers to us..The Zoo...we found a baby bird in the road last week...Jen especially found him/her very interesting and studied it online. Piper as she named it only lived for a couple of days..surviving an obvious fall from its nest and also an attack from Brittain. Jen is very interested in birds now and wants another. The other pictures show the girls and the Kittens..they call have names and are walking so much better...delighting us in their efforts to learn to use the litter box...Brittain is a wonderful mom and other than moving them once off the porch while we were on vacation....she is very patient with them all.
Tori went to the Orthodontist yesterday and was set up on a plan to improve her teeth. The girls go to meet their teachers today and tomorrow and start back to school on thursday. Hope and Emma went back to school yesterday.

Back off Island time..
8-5-08 WOW! We had a fun fun fun time in the Keys. The weather was wonderful...the family was great and the lobsters were running... I will include some pictures in the next post. Jan and I attended Tom Jr.'s wedding on the 26th of July. It was a beautiful ceremony and a lovely dinner. We got to visit with our Ranew cousins and their families.
We headed to Marathon on sunday. We swam in the wonderful salt water...probably will not need to add salt to my food for a long time...lol...we traveled down to Key West twice while down there...Gene rode almost 400 miles on his bike..we all got sunburned..and had the most wonderful time at Mallory Square at sunset..and eating in a Cuban restaurant...Gene bought us Kino sandals made at Key West...we ate at Herbies..yummmy.....Andy, and the Jans cooked us lobster on Wednesday...the girls made up Lobster songs and want to go to Mallory and panhandle..lolol...
it was hard dragging this old Bear body out of the water but I know we can go back sometime before long...
still humming all the Buffett songs.

Counting the Days
7-23-08
We are getting ready to head south friday. It has been a lovely break from grands but I am ready, really ready to see them all. I sometimes wonder if the preparation that a trip requires is ever really worth it all??? I am sure this one will be a fun filled time. Even Ho is getting excited (no clicking of heels you understand but talking about it more)..
The blue bus has been serviced..the dogs will go to their respective kennels on friday, the washing and ironing has mostly been done..all that if left is one more day after today and the packing of the bus...YEAH!

Crazy as always
7-21-08
Received an e-mail from a much beloved cousin the other day..it read.."Are you crazy?"..I had sent her a picture of my new baby, Charlie...YES..I answered her back...and so happy in my crazyness...Charlie has taken over my life..my wonderful sister and her kids took the grands to Fl. to play with them but mainly to give me a summer break...well..things as you can read here..are NEVER quiet around here..and we chose our crazyness for sure (NIN)...
lolol.. Charlie has been really good at sleeping most of the night but he is ready at 6am to be up and out of the bedroom...I am not..have never been..and probably never will be a morning person...so this has been hard for me to adjust to...he is so adorable and really loves his Bear so I am trying to become a more cheerful morning person...
wish me luck!
Gene and Ann did their mowing sessions on saturday...hot and tiring but the draught has decreased the amount of mowing this summer somewhat. Gene and I headed to Brevard for the Cardinal Car Show and Ann to the 4H meeting..sans girls..
Sunday after church, Ann and I and Gene (mostly those two) canned some sweet relish from Cousin Kim and Donnie's farm...cucumbers are abounding out that way!
Heard that Jan and kids are keeping the girls busy and that they are having a wonderful time. Tim and Ra and family are preparing to sell their home... they want to move across the street from Ra's Mom...it is a lovely neighborhood and closer to their school and activities and less driving time...praying that this is accomplished real soon...
Its Monday and Ann has a J camp for her church kids this afternoon...even with the girls gone ..she is so dedicated to the youth...they have some local activities planned..among the activities a visit to our favorite potter...Mr. Tom Case at Pisgah Forest...know they will enjoy that!

Happy Belated Birthday Ho....Ann and I took a cake to Wal-Mart early monday morning..we surprised him for sure..it had his picture on it with him riding his bike...he is such a trooper!
Tuesday he took the day off and we traveled to Lawrenceville for Emma's 13th birthday party. It was a fun trip. The party was a swim party. All her 7th grade class was invited and from the looks of it all..they were mostly all there...a fun bunch of young people. We were late getting home but it was well worth the trip to see Miss Em having so much fun.
The girls continue to have loads of fun at Aunt Jan Camp or as it is being referred to now...Kelsey Kamp...they went to the beach and have ate all kinds of grand meals...thanks sista...
Brittain continues to be a good mother cat...one (Yonah) escaped out of the box today...all is well with the kittens.
Then..drum roll..please... Ann called from church and Mafa and her family had brought the puppies that we could pick one from...I know, the sensible thing is to keep only one dog BUT...not being a sensible Bear...we are now the proud owner of a Shitzu puppy named Charlie...who is now barking his little head off in the bathroom....not much chance of a good nights sleep tonight!
